Dry Cleaning vs Laundry: What's the Difference and When to Use Each

ClothiQ Team

Dry cleaning cleans clothes with a liquid chemical solvent instead of water, while laundry washes them in water with detergent. Use dry cleaning for structured, delicate or "dry clean only" garments like suits, silk sarees and wool; use regular laundry for everyday cottons, linens and synthetics that comfortably tolerate water and agitation.

What is laundry?

Laundry is water-based cleaning. Your clothes are washed in water with detergent, either by hand, in a machine, or through a professional wash and fold service. Water and detergent lift dirt, sweat and water-soluble stains effectively, and the process is gentle on the wallet. It is the right choice for the bulk of an Indian wardrobe: cotton kurtas, t-shirts, jeans, bedsheets, towels and daily wear.

What is dry cleaning?

Despite the name, dry cleaning is not completely dry. Garments are cleaned in a machine using a liquid solvent (most commonly perchloroethylene or a modern hydrocarbon alternative) rather than water. Because there is no water to swell and shrink fibres, dry cleaning protects delicate fabrics, keeps structured tailoring in shape and dissolves oil-based stains that water struggles with. See how it works on our dry cleaning page.

Key differences at a glance

  • Cleaning agent: water and detergent (laundry) vs chemical solvent (dry cleaning).
  • Best for stains: sweat, mud and water-based stains (laundry) vs grease, oil and makeup (dry cleaning).
  • Fabric friendliness: laundry can shrink or fade delicates; dry cleaning is gentler on wool, silk and structured pieces.
  • Cost: laundry is cheaper per item; dry cleaning costs more because of the specialised process.

When to choose dry cleaning

Reach for dry cleaning when the care label says "dry clean only", or for suits, blazers, silk and chiffon sarees, heavily embellished lehengas, woollen coats, ties and pleated garments. It is also the safer bet for oil-based or set-in stains, and for occasion wear you cannot afford to shrink or fade.

When to choose regular laundry

Everyday cotton, linen, denim and most polyester blends are happiest in water. Wash and fold is ideal for weekly loads, gym wear, kids' clothes and household linen. If a garment is machine-washable and the stains are sweat or dust, laundry will clean it well at a fraction of the cost.

India-specific tips

  • Our climate means heavy sweat and dust — rotate a "wash and fold" pile for daily wear and reserve dry cleaning for delicates and occasion wear.
  • During monsoon, water-washed clothes can hold a damp smell if not dried fully; professional finishing avoids that mildew odour.
  • Always point out oil, turmeric or curry stains to your cleaner before processing — the treatment differs from a normal wash.
  • Bright, freshly dyed Indian fabrics can bleed. When in doubt, dry clean the first time.

Frequently asked questions

Is dry cleaning better than washing?

Neither is "better" outright — they suit different fabrics. Dry cleaning protects delicates and dissolves oil stains; washing is cheaper and cleans everyday water-friendly clothes well.

Can I wash a "dry clean only" garment at home?

It is risky. Such labels usually mean the fabric, dye or construction can shrink, warp or bleed in water. When the garment matters, dry clean it.

Does dry cleaning shrink clothes?

Very rarely, because there is no water to swell the fibres. That is exactly why it is preferred for wool and tailored pieces.

Can ClothiQ do both in one order?

Yes. Add both services to a single pickup and we sort, clean and return everything together.
